Boyce Worthley Oration
David Woods has an MSc in Radiological Health and Safety from the University of Salford, England and a BSc(Hons) in Physics from Queens University Belfast. David has 30 years experience in operational health physics, and is a Fellow and past-President of ARPS.
David is Radiation Protection Affinity Leader and Manager, Radiation Protection Services, at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). ANSTO Radiation Protection Services provide operational health physics services to research reactor facilities, radiopharmaceutical production facilities, waste operations facilities and a range of nuclear science and technology research and development areas. RPS also provides external and internal dosimetry services, health physics instrument calibration facilities, and radiation protection training and consultancy services. David is also Lead Country Coordinator for the IAEA/RCA Radiation Protection Project involving 17 countries in the Asia/Pacific Region.
David was Deputy Director, ANSTO Training from 1989 to 1992, in which he was primarily responsible for Commercial and International Training activities. Prior to that David worked as a senior health physicist with the Office of the Supervising Scientist, where he was involved in reviewing and advising on all aspects of radiation safety in uranium mining and milling, as well as practical measurements and input into revised Legislation and Codes of Practice. Before that David was a health physicist with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission's Research Establishment at Lucas Heights. There he managed Health and Safety personnel and gained experience in a wide spectrum of health physics activities.
