Invitation To Attend
On behalf of the AMATA Executive Committee and the AMATA 2010 Program Committee, I warmly invite you to attend the 10th Annual Conference of the Australasian Microarray and Associated Technologies Association (AMATA), to be held in the city of Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) on September 14-17, 2010.
We are both proud and excited to be celebrating a decade of AMATA’s annual conference and it’s contribution to medical research. We will gather in a unique, picturesque and historic setting that combines rugged beauty, sophistication, comfort and breathtaking views. Here we will further the aims of the Association, foster new relationships, and share ideas, whilst enjoying the beauty of Australia’s Island State.
The venue for the 10th Annual conference is the Hotel Grand Chancellor, which is located in the heart of Hobart, right opposite Constitution Dock (rallying and celebration point of the famous Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race). The hotel is also in easy walking distance of beautiful shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants that showcase great cool-climate local wines and seafood.
Why attend AMATA 2010?
The AMATA 2010 Program Committee is currently in the midst of securing at least seven key high profile international speakers to share their expertise in high-throughput technologies including Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS), Bioinformatics, Microarray technologies, and Functional Genomics. As in other years, invited national speakers will also feature, along with presentations selected from abstracts, and student speakers.
We plan to have presentations from some highly successful Australian scientists from AMATA’s newest node member, the Menzies Research Institute in Hobart, and we are pleased to have two senior scientists from the Menzies Research Institute on our 2010 Program committee.
Delivering the opening oration, we are honored to have Professor Joseph Sambrook, Foundation Director of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. Joe is an inspirational speaker and is known around the world for his studies on DNA tumor viruses and the molecular biology of normal and neoplastic cells. His published works include three editions of the best-selling, highly influential laboratory manual "Molecular Cloning", currently the most-cited book in Google Scholar.
In keeping with the tradition of bringing something of the local area to the annual AMATA conference, you will note that the AMATA-10 logo showcases the Tasmanian Devil, a marsupial unique to the State of Tasmania. Of relevance to AMATA delegates, the ‘Tassie Devil’ suffers a debilitating ‘devil facial tumor disease’ (DFTD) that is one of only three identified contagious tumors. This disease will likely result in the extinction of the Tasmanian Devil within the next 20 years, unless we intervene. The 2010 conference program will feature at least one presentation on DFTD, drawing together local wildlife issues and insight into how high-throughput genomic technologies (including microarray and miRNA profiling), are being used to help understand this disease. Tasmanian Devil Genome Sequencing projects are currently being conducted at both the Childhood Cancer Institute Australia and at CSHL, New York. Lessons learned from the genetic analysis of this devastating facial tumour in the Tasmanian Devil may be applied to human cancers.

The AMATA Executive committee acknowledges the significant role played by Biotechnology companies/industry in the medical research community, both in delivering new high throughput technologies that allow us to answer important biological questions, and in providing generous sponsorship that allows associations such as AMATA to meet annually. For trade displays the Hotel Grand Chancellor will not disappoint. A large, open atrium awaits delegates as they emerge from the main conference room, with the beautiful Constitution Dock as a backdrop. Refreshments and lunches will be served in the trade area, making a perfect setting for mingling, showcasing new products and forging new business relationships. Several tiers of sponsorship will be offered to accommodate all budgets and trade requirements.
As the AMATA conference proceedings have been scheduled to wind up on Friday, we encourage you to bring your family and friends to stay longer in Hobart to enjoy the incredible beauty of Australia’s Island State.
