Invitation To Attend

To all Heads of Student Administration I extend a warm invitation to you to participate in the 2008 HOSA Conference which is to be held at the Wrest Point Convention Centre, Hobart from the evening of 26 August, with full days on 27 and 28 August, 2008.

The focus of a full day will be on the key administrative issues affecting higher education from the perspective of the senior managers responsible for the provision of student administration and other services to students and staff. These issues will be clustered around the terms of reference of the Australian Higher Education Review announced by the Minister in March. These terms of reference will resonate with higher education institutions across the Tasman and beyond.  Perhaps of particular relevance to HOSA are aspects of the following terms of reference:

  • Developing a diverse, globally focused and competitive higher education sector with quality, responsive institutions following clear, distinctive missions to provide higher education opportunities to students throughout Australia.
  • Supporting and widening access to higher education, including participation by students from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Establishing the place of higher education in the broader tertiary education sector, especially in building an integrated relationship with vocational education and training.

The focus of another session will be on staff recruitment, retention development and succession planning. Skills shortages, salary competition, poaching within and between institutions, ageing senior staff – is staffing one of the key issues facing higher education? Are these problems as acute for administrative staff as for academic staff? How do institutions manage these issues now? Will these strategies need to change over the next decade?

The focus in a third session will be reserved for showcasing notable achievements, innovations, new services and improvements in efficiency or effectiveness at individual institutions.

The University of Tasmania and its organising partners are proud to be hosting the 2008 HOSA conference.  The conference provides an opportunity to share ideas on the issues that affect higher education from the HOSA perspective as well as the informal interactions that sustain the relationships and collaborations between institutions.

I encourage you to register for the conference and look forward to receiving your abstracts by Friday 4 July, 2008.

Nigel Ewan
Convenor, HOSA 2008
